You will need to lay tackless strip down on the floor to hold the carpet in place. This is essentially wooden pieces with tacks sticking out that will latch onto the carpet. You will also need to lay down a carpet pad for any interior carpeting. This is not only to make the carpet softer and plusher to walk on, but also to prolong the life of your carpeting. Your carpet then gets measured and placed on top of the pad. When you ask for a carpet estimate, be sure to include the price with and without installation fees, so you can determine if it might be worth it for you to lay it down yourself to save a bundle. Compare different estimates from a few places to ensure you are getting the best deal before you move forward.
