How to Install
If you already have carpeting on your stairs, you will need to remove it and clean the stair underneath. Remove any adhesive of carpet padding, and make sure your stairs are level and in good condition. Carpet treads are pretty much centered on the step, with a view of the wood stair on each side, so if your stairs are in poor condition, you may want to get them refinished before you place the treads on. Otherwise a simple cleaning and leveling if necessary, will do.
Treads
If you buy proper stair treads, they will already be pre-cut and come with double sided tape ready on the underside. You simply need to measure your tread to ensure it is centered on the step, push it back to the far end of the step as far as possible, and remove the paper to expose the tape. Press it down tightly to ensure it is secure and in place. You will need to be sure there is no overhang over the front of the step since that could cause you to slip or trip.
Carpet Pieces
If you don't have proper treads but have a piece of carpeting that you can cut to size, you can also use it for this project, but it will be slightly more work.
1. Measure and cut your carpeting to size. Be sure that each piece is the same size.
2. Staple down padding on the step.
3. Place a tackless trip on the back of the carpet piece and attach it to the padding. Staple the front end of the carpet to the padding.
With this carpet installation technique, many people create more a stair runner, since individual treads may end up having rough cut edges, so a runner will keep the entire area looking smooth. The option is yours though, and for a quick job, especially on outdoor steps where you simply need some grip, it might be the cheaper solution. For interior wood carpet stair treads, looking at warehouse dealers can offer you a wide selection at great prices, so there is no need to take extra time in cutting your own.
