Carpeting Stairs - DIY And Carpeting Prices Tips

Carpeting stairs is always a good idea, because it will protect the condition of your wood and it will act as an added protection against slipping. Luckily, it can be functional and stylish as well, since there are many different ways you can put carpet on stairs, and you can install it all yourself. Carpeting doesn't have to be very expensive, but it can add a lot of warmth and charm to your home.

Carpet Treads

Carpet stair treads are like mini rugs that fit onto all the individual steps. They come pre-cut to size to fit onto the center of each stair, with space for the wood to peak out on all sides. They are the easiest to install, since they come with double sided tape already attached to the back of each piece, and there are many different materials and designs you can choose from.   If they are placed properly without any overhang and pressed down firmly, they will be secure and attractive and put in in no time.

Carpet Runners

Stair runners are another great option that can be done as a DIY project. They are also easy to put in, but you there are a few more steps to take to get it done properly.

1. Measure the width of each stair tread as well as the height of each stair to determine the entire length the runner will have to cover.

2. Cut pieces of tackless strip according to the width and height measurements minus one inch. You will hammer on piece onto the tread and one onto the back of the step rising up.

3. Cut carpet padding into pieces and attach it to the tackless strip. It will need to fit in all the way to the back of each step and wrap up and around the nose to meet up with the strip on the uprise of the step. Hammer it into place every 6 inches.

4. Lay your runner down over the padding and use carpet tacks every 4 inches to secure it. Make sure to smooth it tight as you move down and tuck it in well under each tread nose.

Many people also opt for thick and luxurious wall to wall carpet installation in wool or other materials, but this project is best left for professional installation. Shop around for the best carpeting prices then look into the qualifications of different installers to have a wall to wall project done. Runners and treads though are fast and beautiful ways for carpeting stairs, so they are worth considering.
