Installing Carpet - Learn To Lay Carpet While Keeping Carpet Installation Cost Low

Many people know that installing carpet can be a big hassle and expense, so the best thing you can do to save money but still get the effect you want is to get tips on how to lay carpet yourself, so you can avoid professional fees. Many carpets are now being made with easy to install techniques that allow anyone to handle their own DIY project, so with the right guidance, you can still have a beautiful home but save on carpet installation cost at the same time.

Carpets to Buy

The first step in saving money is to look at the different carpeting options you have. For carpeting rooms, especially smaller bedrooms or dens, look into finishing carpet remnants into area rugs to place down for half the cost. You can also consider getting carpet tiles, which are the cheapest option and have easy to apply self-adhesive strips. Also, consider the materials of the carpeting you buy. Everyone knows wool is the elite carpeting material, but nylon is slightly less expensive and is extremely durable and resilient. Polyester blends are even more reasonable, and they may serve your purpose, especially for low traffic areas. For carpeting stairs, look into the differences between runners or carpet treads, but prepare for the fact that both options can easily be handled on your own.

How to Install

For self-adhesive carpet tiles or stair treads, installation is relatively self-explanatory and simple, but if you want to carpet your entire room, it can still be done yourself for a professional looking job.

1. Take proper measurements of your room to ensure your carpeting is cut to size.

2. Lay down tack strips along the edges of your room. Your carpet will secure itself on the tacks.

3. Place down carpet padding about 1 inch smaller all around to protect your carpet and to add plushness.

4. Attach your carpeting to one end of the tack strip. Use power stretcher and knee kicker tool to properly stretch your carpet across the room to avoid wrinkling and damage.

5. Secure your carpet to the other end of the tack strip, pulling it taut.

6. Add tile to carpet transition strips if you have a big height difference between the edge of your carpet and the flooring it meets with.

All the tools and knowledge you need for installing your carpet can be gained by following manufacturer's instructions and getting advice from a home improvement center. You can follow set by step guidelines that will take you through the entire process of installing carpet, and you will be pleased that your extra effort saved you a bundle.
